These decorative and colored contact lenses which people buy to complete their beauty and Halloween look can seriously damage your eyes. These decorative colored lenses are being sold illegally over the counter at novelty stores and beauty supply.
According to the report, Geo Medical, a Korean Company that makes these types of colored lenses has been charged by Department Of Justice. They had charged them with “illegally bringing contact lenses into the United States by dramatically undervaluing shipments of documents submitted to customs officials.” They had also charged operators of Orange Counties and Takashima for illegally selling these decorative lenses without prescriptions.
According to FDA, “Colored contact lenses are medical devices. Places that advertise them as cosmetics or sell them over the counter, without a prescription, are breaking the law.” In 2013, the lenses made by Geo were found contaminated with microorganism by the US Food and Drug Administration. Geo was put on the ”Red List” restricting import.
A spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office said that “We believe that Geo Medical severely undervalued the shipments to avoid customs scrutiny, which would have led to the seizure of the contact because of the FDA action following the discovery of contaminated products”
Doctors had given continuously warning for risk of colored contact lenses for years. There is nothing wrong with the colored lenses, but problems arise when people don’t use them correctly. They don’t wear it properly or they don’t get fit into the eyes and they do not clean it regularly. According to the report of an FDA Optometrist, “Bacterial infections can be extremely rapid, result in corneal ulcers, and cause blindness — sometimes within as little as 24 hours if not diagnosed and treated promptly.” These unclean lenses can give severe eye issues.
According to Rebecca Seawright, chairperson of the NY State Assembly’s Consumer Fraud Protection Committee, these colored lenses may also contain harmful chemicals. She warned consumers about it and the harmful hazard of permanent eye damage. These colored contact lenses can make you go blind. She also warned the teens and children about the lenses which are going very popular among them to dress up like a Zombie. According to some report, about 50,000 people will dress as zombies at this year’s Greenwich Village Halloween Parade alone.
